Martha Wame - staff member-in-training for Media/Communications
I grew up in the coastal town of Alotau in Milne Bay Province, where my mother, Faye, is also from. My father, Inapa, hails from Balimo in Western Province, PNG. There are five people in my family. Both my parents were teachers so we packed and moved frequently during my childhood. As a result of my upbringing and our involvement in church, God began to develop in me a heart for missions. In 1990, during an outreach in my local church, I gave my heart to the Lord. I also had wonderful friends who added value to my life and taught me about Jesus and the Bible, and as I grew, I experienced God in many ways.
Before getting involved with BTA, my most recent job involved writing radio news and telling people about Jesus on the airwaves of Papua New Guinea. I still treasure every moment of this experience because God used it to show me how to love people who did not have a Christian upbringing. While working with Wantok Radio Light, I connected with many Christian organisations such as Operation Mobilization, Scripture Union, Youth with a Mission, and Prison Fellowship, and specifically with Bible translation organisations such as SIL and the Bible Society of PNG. My friends and I, all of whom belonged to a Graduate Christian Fellowship (GCF), usually met on Wednesday evenings in the garage of the director of the Bible Translation Association of Papua New Guinea. Because of our interaction with the Thomas family, I became particularly interested in BTA.
Before beginning my university studies, I felt the burden of joining BTA because they had a need for someone with my specific qualifications. Also, because I had witnessed teachings in PNG churches that were not Biblically sound, I felt a burden for my generation to come to know the Bible well. Many people of my generation cannot read or understand the Bible because it is not in the language they know best. I talked with Steven Thomas and he encouraged me to join BTA. It is my desire that people around the country will come to know more and more about God through His Word.
I am currently studying toward a degree in Communication Arts (Journalism) at Divine Word University in Madang Province, and I also work occasionally doing small projects for BTA. By the end of 2010, after completing my studies, I hope to continue serving the Lord on a full time basis through Communications and Media work with BTA. I am forever grateful for the support of my widowed mother, my ever supportive siblings, and my countless friends and mission families.
